College Dems calls for action for WMU student arrested in Saudi Arabia

Kalamazoo, MI- July 20, 2017- It has recently come to light that Mujtaba’a al-Sweikat, a prospective student at Western Michigan University, faces execution in Saudi Arabia for allegedly attending a pro- democracy rally. The Michigan Federation of College Democrats calls on our elected officials, whether local or federal, to condemn this action and engage where possible in preventing this act.

“Mujtaba’a al-Sweikat was just trying to achieve his own American Dream of studying in Michigan when it was cut short for attending a pro-democracy rally,” said Eleonore Edgell, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Federation of College Democrats. “Our elected leaders must stand up for this prospective student and stand firm against human rights abuses.”

Al- Sweikat was accused of attending protests in 2011 that witnesses describe as peaceful. He has been held in Daammam since then, and on May 25, 2017, the highest court in Saudi Arabia confirmed that he will face beheading.

The Michigan Federation of College Democrats and many individual College Democrats chapters across Michigan stand in solidarity with Mujtaba’a and others across the world whose right to peaceably assemble continues to persecuted.
